Dry containers can sit for a day and barely change inside. Reefer containers can't. The moment a refrigerated box loses power, the clock starts running on product loss — produce ripens too fast, pharmaceuticals drift out of their required range, meat and seafood spoil. That makes drayage, the short truck move between the port or rail ramp and its final destination, one of the riskiest legs in the entire cold chain.

It's also one of the most overlooked. What Makes a Reefer Move Different

A dry van container just needs to arrive intact. A reefer container needs to arrive at the exact temperature it left at, sometimes within a degree or two, for the whole trip. That means the refrigeration unit itself, not just the truck pulling it, has to keep running the entire time it's on the road.

On the vessel and in the rail yard, reefers plug into shore power or yard power so their refrigeration units can run continuously without interruption. Once a container comes off the ship or railcar and onto a chassis for the road move, that outside power source disappears. From that point until the box reaches a plug at the warehouse or distribution center, the reefer unit runs on a generator set, or genset, mounted to the chassis or trailer pulling it.

That means confirming the unit is actually holding its setpoint, checking fuel level in the genset, and verifying that the temperature recorder or data logger is running and capturing readings.
